The SPCA and other animal activists have intervened to persuade the town elders to cancel one of the most popular events – the throwing of dead rabbits. The annual event is highlighted by children 14 and under hurling dead bunnies. SPCA national chief executive Robyn Kippenberger called the rabbit toss a “desecration.” She said that this might lead some children to inflict harm on other animals. “We will be doing something else for the children, probably a beanbag-throwing competition,” said pig hunt president Jo Moriarty. While the residents and children of Waiau were disappointed at the cancellation, others were relieved that the event was no more. “Do you throw your dead grandmother around for a joke at her funeral?” animal cruelty inspector Charles Cadwallader said. While the idea of tossing rabbits offends the sensibilities of most people, New Zealand has a different view of the cuddly, little fellows. They are not talking about taking the family pet from its cage, killing it, then tossing it through the air. The rabbits involved in the toss are wild rabbits hunted by the children’s parents. New Zealand has a little problem with rabbits. About 30 million rabbits roam the countryside where they are an enormous pest causing $22 million in damage to the economy every year. As you see, it is not that the 400 people of the rural community of Waiau are crazy or vicious. They just want to control the rabbits and pigs trampling through their town.
