No it doesn't even when many people are poor or when people make more than you think they should. "Doesn't fit with how Ted would like to arrange the universe if he could control everything" != "broken".

Without the wealth generated from the free market you would have fewer really rich people, but that would be a bad thing not a good one. Also you would have a higher percentage of people who where poor in absolute terms.
