I left in the spring of '00. Things change. That's a shame.

I recall the area shutting down after dark, except for catching the bus on the Capital end to ride to the other and/or back, things would be popping down in LoDo. I actually let a work friend drag me out there one night to a... what was it... a martini bar. a bar dedicated to making all kinds of martinis? I do not like martinis. I like my beer. And they were all so done up and the stentch of perfume and cologne would choke ya dead. but they were nice enough folk so what the hay?

And on the Capital Hill side, at the end point, was a lil dicey then, too.

I've never carried a purse, so I don't quite get the concept, but after dark it only makes sense, tuck the money & id in a pocket, and cellphone. leave the rest. wear shoes you can walk well in, and run if need be.

As to panhandlers, I lived in SF too long to worry a whit of them. at times a minor inconvenience, but no more. there but for the grace of god...

course it can help to know how to speak in crazy. In such situations, I just make sure I have some change, or have my smile and shrug ready to say I'm all tapped out for the night.
