I don't think you will want to hold your short going into the weekend. Is bob short? 5 foot 2? or holding his shorts? (hope he's in CA/AZ and not in North East) Rob, can you share what kind of video board you have now, and might buy in the future?if the answer isn't an S3 based board, what the hell are you doing here? seriously, i think you might short ATI at $35 C, because those executives at DIMD are STOOPIDLY starting a price war. The Rendition V2100 board (Stealth II S220 for everyone else - STOOPID naming sequence), is priced about $30/bd too low. This will cause price/performance problems for ATI and their current generation of chips (a la S3 1996) in Q1 1/2 1998. The STOOPID thing is that the board is not even in STOCK, and they are trying to undercut the competition's price! No premium pricing at all! DIMD is obviously trying to take back market share lost to Matrox and ATI, so they are going to KILL the add in industry's margin for 1998. at $0.58/3D winmark, the S220 is the best price performance, even over the Riva 128 boards. Of course the Riva 128 boards can reach that price/performance by dropping $30, but as a premium product won't need to for a few months. DIMDs pricing strategy is indicative of what hurt the disk drive market, the dram market, and the modem market. no margins mean they cannot build cash reserves, and cannot reinvest into more R&D. No wonder innovation has to come from small startups...the big companies don't know how to run an oligopoly. by the way, i recommend all on this thread buy a GX 2 board. WHY? am I nuts? yes, and because you are all traders. The GX 2 board has Duo View, which lets you hook up another monitor and run your STOCK QUOTES, and internet chat FULL SCREEN, without that annoying flipping between page to page. Of course you need to buy another monitor, and ZD net just did a great review on monitors. RIVA 128 and V2100 can't do this. business vs. hot kids toys if S3 can get GX3 at V2100 performance levels (3D win 97 marks of 175 - double the GX2 mark of 82), then they will capture Dell and Compaq business boxes next year. The business model of having 2 screens available will be nice for those box makers (they get to sell the extra screens) This is an example of looking after your customer's margins... JMO BL
