Richard and Barry, 56K is very difficult to archive. You need at least one digital modem and the anolog modem must have a straight connection to Central Office.

Yes, I know that 56k modems are not symetrical, I said that I would not get 56k even if the other person had one. To get 56k, which you can get in the downstream direction only, you must be receiving data from an ISP that has a pure digitial connection directly to the phone company at the phone company central office. Even in this case, you get 56K downstream only; in any other case, you get 33.6 or less in both directions.
