We are governed at all levels by America's luckiest children, sons and daughters of the abundance, and they call themselves optimists but they're not optimists—they're unimaginative. They don't have faith, they've just never been foreclosed on. They are stupid and they are callous, and they don't mind it when people become disheartened. They don't even notice. Peggy, I'm glad to see you return to your senses. But why did you endorse Obama last year? It was all there to see if you looked.

Ms. Noonan is usually pretty sharp, but she didn't mention the biggest threat of all imo. The biggest threat to America is that we don't trust one other. Not the courts or the bankers. Not the guy who sells us his goods. Not the client we contract with, or institutions that deliver our mail, or license our cars, or run our trains and planes or ships. We especially don't trust the politicians who are supposed to protect us and our nation from harm and destruction. We don't trust strangers, or neighbors or even some of our friends. And the reason we don't is because we see that most people really don't care. We are becoming a society of drones and people know this. They are treated like numbers and are greeted with scowling faces by disgruntled workers who feel like their employer is taking advantage of them and employers who feel like their lenders are taking advantage of them. And it seems like everyone is unhappy. The proof that we can't trust others is everywhere. The busting of bubbles and subsequent arrest and conviction of monstrous thieves who rob us all blind in their greedy quest under our very noses. We are bombarded with onerous rules on how to live our lives from a more and more intrusive government that we know is out of control and full of leaders who couldn't manage an ice cream parlor let alone a huge over bloated and inept bureaucracy. We know we are good honest people who could do a better job, but we know those who are responsible, and we know they have failed. We know that most of them have been corrupted, and that we cannot trust a one of them. Leaders who tax us and tax us more and then allow fraud and waste and tell us to give them more in taxes so they can get a handle on all of that fraud and waste. Leaders who tell us we don't save enough and then allow us to be robbed. Leaders who tell us we save too much and we need to spend. Leaders who ignore us and tell us we are "astroturf" or nazis when we complain. Leaders who call our only line of defense......our men and women in the Military........"killers of innocents" terrorists and Nazis (there is that pejorative again.) Leaders who say things about other people that we wouldn't want our children to hear. We know they do that because they really don't care about us. She should have mention the loss of trust. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The biggest threat to America right now is not government spending, huge deficits, foreign ownership of our debt, world terrorism, two wars, potential epidemics or nuts with nukes. The biggest long-term threat is that people are becoming and have become disheartened, that this condition is reaching critical mass, and that it afflicts most broadly and deeply those members of the American leadership class who are not in Washington, most especially those in business.
