The link you provided last October now leads to a solution to my problem of the solid colour desktop taking much much longer to display than a wallpaper image. The fix can be found at support.microsoft.com My original question was in October. The solution was provided in December. I discovered it in March. My speed amazes me! But without your help it would still be a mystery. Cheers, PW. P.S. My work-around, creating a solid-coloured image and using it as a desktop, seemed like "cheating." Since Microsoft suggested this same approach, I don't feel so bad.
