OFDMA is the heart of Wimax and also of Wifi. Not a new technology by any means. What is new is that we have had NETWORK improvements in the form of how these are deployed which address the basic operations.

Wifi was hte first 802.11G to use OFDMA, but the network is lousy for a carrier class network with interfernce, network planning, multiple users, thruput, call blocking, QOS, latency, etc.

So wimax was invented which took the basic OFDMA waveform and then went about fixing all the things wrong with the network and core issues. Wimax itself is not all that bad and served as the format and basis for LTE. Just hte LTE guys took the same basic PHYSICAL (PHY) hardware and improved and molded it to the carrier voice networks.

LTE is not all that much of an advancement in OFDMA technology as it is in the overall topology and implementation of the technology. But LTE will depend on the reuse of small cells and micro cell technology.

Wimax is coming at LTE from teh Wimax side, starting to 802.16M and hten doing a Wimax LTE form. UMTS and US CDMA are both going towards the LTE side by changing to the OFDMA PHY, but molding hte core networks towards the unified all IP core tehcnology. In the end, the winner is the backhaul guys, not the spectrum guys. The cheapest and fastest way to increase cpaapcity is cell splitting and micro cells. the carrier have bet big on Femto cells, but in the end, this may turn into a bigger network to manage than they can handle. The SON (self organizing networks) work may help them, but this is more like 2014-2015 timeframe for them to get it out and working.

the near term is microcells.

As to my post last night, if yo uadd 6 MHz in spectrum, you only gain the users you can deploy in 6 MHz, so if your cell tower has a limited range and radius, then you may add 32-64 more users in that extra spectrum. but you pay like $1B for aunified network upgrade for the license and the new freqneucy equipment.

Whereas, you can spend $100-500k to plsit your cell into 10 cells using hte spectrum you already have and increase the user count there by 10-20x and only in the areas you need it. No nationwide spectrum rollout and purchase, no begging hte RF chip vendors to spin a new chip to use your (and ONLY yours) spectrum, no begging the handset guys to use your new spectrum (or worse yet, have someone like VZ block your hadset guy from serving the new kid on teh block). You can just do as you please and move on.
