How bright could the guy be ??

I suspect that he grew up in an intellectual, radical household. His world view was shaped early and reinforced by his family throughout his life. He was smart enough to have ways of dealing with the cognitive dissonance. He was also smart enough to devise ways of avoiding the immediate inherent problems. One of the contexts in which I knew him was his role as a union functionary. He and I devised programs that appeased the unions but actually worked. I don't know if he collaborated in that consciously or not but it was a win-win.

He and I never had a philosophical discussion of Marxism or much of anything else political. We talked about work and personal things. So I don't know how he would have responded to a direct philosophical challenge from me.
