It certainly was scary to this little kid when my folks started up from Ouray on the way to Durango in the wintertime...no chains...SNOW, and slipping to nearly the edge...Mother turned around to all of us, and said "YOU ARE NOT TO SAY A WORD ---just keep your eyes shut until I tell you to open them."

My Dad was driving, and none of us said a thing until later. Somehow, he got turned around, and we headed back to Ouray....think we all went back to Grandma's for a couple more days...he had chains on the next time over. He later said that he had driven that road numerous times, but had NEVER seen it that bad, and we were all just thankful that we lived and didn't see the bottom of that valley....

When they built that road in the 30s, they must have had a terrible time building it....I guess the poor excuse for guard rails (those square blocks of rocks every once in a while must have been their idea of guard rails)... Wonder if it is still that way all these years later?
