SaaS is growing strongly in some markets and not at all in others. It happens to be a particularly strong area for VARs of Progress Software, something like 40% of which are doing at least some SaaS. SaaS <> Cloud .... Cloud is simply an alternative for delivering SaaS which has some attractions. And, yes, Kumar, some risks.

On call, CEO Chambers says looking back Q4 marked the beginning of the upturn; clearly the tipping pt. Q4-Q1 sequential metrics (revs, book-to-bill, orders, etc.) were stronger than in past qtrs... Q1 orders were in line with past Q1s.... Co is starting to see economic recovery gaining momentum in most geographies; especially pleased with the US. This suggests the recovery is well underway... Chambers says given its belief that the mkt is now beginning to accelerate, it should be no surprise that expenses will begin to increase. Hirings will be very targeted with focus on productivity improvements and movement into new market adjacencies... Overall orders on a global basis in Q1 were down in the high-single digits from a YoY perspective while the US YoY orders were approximately flat. Revs fell YoY everywhere except Japan... Regarding the CSCO, EMC, VMW partnership, mgmt says Cisco and EMC's track record on acquisition, strategic partnerships and customer-driven strategy is among the best in the industry... Co sees Q2 gross margins at 64-65% vs 64.3% Street expectation... In Q&A, Chambers does not see any large acquisitions closing in CYQ4... Co says the stimulus package is starting to have an effect on enterprise business... Competitive pricing pressures in emerging mkts is brutal...
