LT,
One of these days America is going to wake up to the fact that most of those, square-jawed, steeley-eyed generals are simply politicos in a gov't issued suits-of-a-different color who are in the main obsessed with power and the fat, fat life they've carved out for themselves....

Westmoreland is the prototype...handsome, intense, completely self-assured, dumb as a rock...witness Tet '68 when he got suckered into having over half of all the US manuver battalions up in I Corps (while the VC pillaged the rest of the country) because he was scared shitless about losing Khe Sahn.
There are few, very few exceptions..like Omar Bradley; Eisenhower when he finally called bullshit on the Military-Industrial complex.

McChrystal co-signed the lies piling up after Tillman's death. If you have any doubt, read Jon Krukauer's "Where Men Win Glory".
