Imaging has saved me in the past and present. Its a must for computers now a days. A back up will not wipe the virus off the partition, but restoring a backed up image will. I image my drives once a week with Acronis True Image 10.

When I had the I love You virus back in 2001, my anti virus software was disabled, for a software install, forgot to turn it back on, I clicked on a suspicious file and bang I got hit with it.

I restored the C: image, then ran a virus scan of all my hard drives to make sure there was no other infections, all was fine. Back then I used Drive Image, which is almost exactly the same look and feel of Acronis.
