In NJ I think the Dem turnout especially in the big cities like Newark wasn't as strong as they hoped/expected. The polls didn't seem to reflect voter sentiment too much either, but there was a definite upward trend for Christie the last few days of the campaign.

McDonnell winning by 18 pts in a state Obama won by 6 pts or so. Christie won (looks like by 6 pts) in a Democratic state Obama carried with a third party taking votes away from him. A big win for conservatives - now if Hoffman can complete the clean sweep.

I think the premise that independents h/b breaking away from the Dem party is pretty well established.

What no one is reporting is how grossly wrong the polls were. Virginia Governor's race was a slaughter and NJ wasn't really that close.

Postmortem of the polls will find that the party turnout estimates they used were not making enough allowance for more seniors & Republicans, and fewer young people and minorities. Betcha.
