ponokee - Did you get some bad maple syrup ? Gristle in your back bacon ? Why slam Canada ?

On the imagination, industry, innovation issue -

Canada has the largest number of hardrock (metal) mining firms of any nation and extensive worldwide operations. They have a dynamic petroleum sector.

They have widely adopted nuclear reactor designs. They also design biotech and small molecule drugs.

I have been pretty happy with my Canadian investments.

They has been able to make a multi-language nation work, with the friction amounting to not much more than a few blown up mailboxes. (I'm giving away my age here)
Not something the US should even attempt.

>>90% + of your population cowers 100 miles from the U.S. border<<

Canadians settled into a limited area because of geography and climate. Such lopsided population concentrations are typical of many large countries including Australia, Brazil, Russia, and the USA.

Two Canadian researchers, Banting and Best, showed the cause
of diabetes, which is lack of insulin or poor use of it. Millions of diabetes patients around the world benefitted from insulin treatment.
That happened in Toronto.
Take a first class train ride across Canada. You will see the world's largest collection of wheat fields. Canada
also has vast forests and lots of good mines. I won't mention
tar sands.
True, Canada has never had a politician of the caliber of
Lincoln or Obama.
