I thought Metanor, rather than a case of flooding was a case of the cage being rung down (by one of the 3 miners) to a level that was still underwater as the de-watering had not progressed that far. i.e. men were lowered in the elevator down below the water level and only chance was to climb out top of cage and swim to surface while cage was being lowered at approx 1000 feet per minute. If that is the case, the victims were mostly to blame as well as the hoist operator and supervision/management.

I think Belmoral was a case of the mining crew blasting into the lake bottom and the lake and mud/silt rushed into the undg. workings killing the crew. Blame was placed on engineering dept for misjudging the depth of the bedrock/mud interface.
