If America wants to be self-supporting we need to cut back on defense spending I suspect that we profit a great deal from our massive weaponry and history of use (Dresden, A-bombs). The leadership class of US trading partners must greatly fear the prospect of a collapsed US. What would a extremist demagogue propelled to office by a desperate US public do with US weaponry? It's not just tanks and jets, but also the REALLY scarey stuff: EMP weapons, designer viruses, and electronic mischief. Protection rackets are actually very profitable.
