KT,

I don't have the time or investment interest, but someone should calculate the ROIC for the health insurance industry as a whole (and among the few largest players) and figure out if they are making excess returns. If they are, that will provide all the political ammo required to make changes. If not, that means the costs are actually rising as fast as the premiums.

What is obvious is that there needs to be more competition within the system.

I'm an individual in NYC. I have very few choices to buy health insurance. I should be able to buy insurance from any company in the world willing to write it in NY, but I can't because they aren't allowed to be here.

I can't comprehend why the health insurance business isn't a lot more like the auto insurance business. In auto, the company does not insure every cost of maintaining your car, just the really big things. I also have a choice of about a gazillon companies to insure with, all with a variety of options. That obviously wouldn't solve all the problems in health care because everyone wants everything and we are already the hole many trillions, but it certainly would help.
