So no change in Hong Kong for 50 years. That's a long time to remain prisoners of the state. "We promise to keep you slaves for 50 years". To some such a promise is a virtue. Some people prefer freedom at 1.7 or even 3 levels on the 0 to 10 scale. Hong Kong's 1.0 is thin gruel freedom.

To some "I will release my slaves in 50 years" is not cause for admiring the slave owner's commitment, just a good guide to how long he thinks he'll live and want slaves.

China obviously wanted the outcome in the negotiations or the disagreement would have proceeded more along the lines of the opium import negotiations of a time gone by but with China well-equipped with gun-boats and the outcome being "We do not wish to have 50 years of opium, racism, or prisoners".

As with all racist ideology, when pushed to give definitions of "Chinese lineage", it got too hard so you slid off like a crab.
