"you use it or something else every day"

Coffee and weed.

"I never bothered to try the stuff"

It shows, and it's too late to make up for lost time. I wish I had better news for you, but the old biologic clock just keeps ticking.

What Rat fails to understand is that the reason plants produce toxins including neurotoxins is for self-defence. They do not produce them for the benefit of the predators eating them.

By poisoning the predator's brain, it makes that predator incapable and subject to attack by an unpoisoned predator such as wolf, lion, tiger, shark, or even a flea which will escape Rat's fumbled attempts at self defence.

Some plants produce fruit which is intended as bait for animals such as Rat to eat them and disperse the seeds along with a dollop of poop as fertilizer, moisture and protection against seed eaters. They make fruit delicious to ensure it is eaten.

The oranges, bananas, apples, kiwifruit, black berries, straw berries, watermelon, pumpkin and swarms of others compete to be the most attractive and thereby achieve greatest propagation.

Warfie's neurotoxins are poisons from plants hoping to kill him off. Humans have got such an easy way of life that pressure from predators is nearly non-existent. Wharfie would know not to go into conflict with predators while loaded with dope.

The simplistic "science" of the rats given dope to prevent dementia in the old is not going to translate into lifelong improved performance for people or even old age improvements. Any improvement in memory will be ephemeral due to stress and incur costs such as mental stress and psychological disruption. The experimental rats know they have been poisoned and becomes hyper-vigilant and brings memory to bear to attempt to cope. Some simple anthropomorphic thought experiments can show what's going on.

It's amusing that Rat thinks we should accept his dope-poisoned old brain as being a good guide to global warming due to CO2 in 100 years. Thanks Rat for the guidance, I'll take it into account.
