Good points, Swan. Nobody is certain whether the problem lies with our perceptions, or reality.

We try to look past what may be excessive negativity, but we can't shake the feeling that this time really is different, and that here in North America we're witnessing fundamental change: the boundless prosperity that began after WWII is gone, as is Pax Americana and US global dominance.

The upturn in markets seems to defy fundamentals. Globally, trillions in unreconciled debt lies "off the books", and unprecedented deficit spending is pervasive. It is widely said that monetary policy can't possibly contravene greater market forces, but that seems to be exactly what's happening.

Just my opinion, but I don't believe in magic. The interventionist conjurers have created the illusion of returning prosperity, but an illusion it is. Sooner or later, the fundamentals will assert themselves.
