The House approved an abortion amendment and rejected a Republican substitute for landmark health care legislation, paving the way to final passage of the Democrats' plan late Saturday.

The House voted to add to its bill the amendment sponsored by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., and others, that prohibits individuals who receive insurance subsidies from purchasing any plan that pays for elective abortions.
