Obama was elected president of the Harvard Law Review by votes of other student editors, from among 19 candidates. I would certainly agree that the choice probably had a lot to do with affirmative action.

According to the LA Times (perhaps not the most unbiased of sources?) the president is the last person to edit student articles. He is also described as editor-in-chief.
