Quick story about that. About 20 years ago, I had a neighbor/friend who had a PhD in Subparticle Physics from MIT. Nice guy, once past his arrogance. He was submitting an article to some physics journal, and asked me to help with the proofreading. He consistently put his periods after a closing quote, and we went round and around about it. He wasn't about to listen to a plebeian such as I, and submitted his article.

A few months later, he brought a copy of the journal over to my house, hopping mad. They'd edited his article to put the periods inside the quotes.

Moral of the story is that even PhDs are at the mercy of English teachers. <G>
