It really comes down to individuals. Unfortunately, we have become a society where a degree confers automatic brilliance. Like you I know people withe very little formal education that I admire and respect immensely. When I was in the corporate world for awhile I hired MBA's as was the fashion. I got to the point that it was the MBA's CV's that went in the round file first. I much preferred liberal arts degrees. They didn't think they already knew everything and were eager to learn.
