Employers pay for medical premiums for each employee under a group plan. My company uses Tufts. We could also use Harvard Pilgrim, Blue Cross or Partners because they all offer similar plans with minor differences in options and price. Until now, we have paid 100% of the premium for each employee. That is our contract with them and they value it as a nice fringe benefit for working here. But since Tufts raised our premium from $1,100 per month to $1,900 per month over the past two years, we are reassessing our policy of paying 100%.

The increases are a direct result of the state mandated coverage. All policies from each insurance company doing business in Mass have increased substantially since the legislation was enacted.
