War. (As in: "diplomacy by other means". :-)

And: religious conflict among two different strains of religious fundamentalists....

And: economic/political conflict over hundreds of Billions in oil wealth....

And: conflict over such concepts as 'self-rule', sense of nationality, 'freedom of religion'....

And: just plain bloody-mindedness!

A Sunni/Shia divide runs through the national populations of *all* of the Gulf communities. And: most of the Saudi's oil production comes from their Gulf region where the local population is majority Shia --- long repressed and denied by the state apparatus of the Sunni Monarchy.

That goes a long way to explain why the Saudis are bombing Shiite rebels across the border in Yemen --- they fear that their own Saudi Shiite citizens may take encouragement from the attacks of their Shiite fellows....
