MD State houses have been run by dems for over 150 years give or take a few. The were a dem southern state and then just when the libs and minorities switched to the dems the US Gov grew like crazy, vastly increasing the populations of Montgomery and PG counties

No fable, its simple reality. CA's state government didn't used to be the monstrosity that it is now.

It was that way when I was there in the late 1980s and mid 90s. CA has over 30 million people. With that many people, the gov't has to be large.

NY's been living off the financial sector, which started to get established in Manhattan in the 1700s,

So what?

Maryland didn't become consistantly a supporter of Democrats until less than two decades ago,

Yes, as it became more prosperous and educated it became more liberal. Again, that should tell you something.

New Jersey was "purple" until recently (and voted Republican in the recent election),

Purple? lol. Seriously, Tim, even teabaggers would laugh in your face. NJ is as blue as the midday sky.

also those two states used to have smaller governments just like CA and NY did.

Yes, 30 years ago, their gov'ts were smaller because they had less people. Typically gov't grows as the population grows. In the case of NY its also as corruption grows.

And then there is WA state HW, NH and CT. One more time.......there is a message for you in all this data. Open your mind, Tim.
