It is... but the English have a deep disdain for the Irish.

I've always believed the Irish remained Catholic just to oppose the English rather than any true papist feelings.

The Irish stupidly tried to be good Roman Catholics rather than adopting to fit their native born superstitions like the Latin Americans did.

They lost their language, their potatoes and their identity fighting the English - not a very good trade.
