Don't forget that the (R) party embraced the southern racists rejected by the (D)'s with open arms, and ran race-based campaigns from then on. Which is why 95% of blacks vote (D) today.

YOu are revising history. The southern democrats were called Dixiecrats and were very conservative and filabusterd for 14 days to stop the 1964 civil rights act and integration and then changed to the Republican party after the liberals forced integration down the Souths throats. The 1964 civil rights act was enacted by a partnership of blacks and liberals fighting southern conservatives mostly. Strom thrumond, Jesse Helms and George Wallace. Hardly liberals-lol!! Imagine people so stupid they fought integration!! I was involved in that movement to end segregation.
