U.S. Geothermal Fleet Sees Pokey Growth In 2009

BY CHRIS HOLLY | Energy Daily | April 15, 2010

While installation of wind energy and other renewables soared last year, geothermal saw rather pokey progress, with developers bringing only seven new projects with a cumulative capacity of 176 megawatts on line in five states in 2009, according to an industry update released Tuesday by the Geothermal Energy Association. The new projects raised total U.S. installed geothermal capacity to nearly 3,100 MW, the world’s largest, but the industry’s growth trajectory clearly paled next to the thousands of megawatts installed by the wind industry last year and the healthy bump seen in solar capacity.
