I'm not really an authority on the Koran, or the Bible for that matter. As it was explained to me, and I've posted the articles here before, the hadiths that are referenced with respect to what some Muslims believe - not all Muslims - are like the Apocalypse in the Bible that talks about the end of the world.

Some Muslims interpret those hadiths not as a prediction of what is going to happen but as a direction given by Mohammad. Some Shias believe those hadiths as a direction. Sunnis don't follow those teachings.

Those Shias who hold this belief are called Mahdaviats. For centuries people believe that one day the 12th Imam Mahdi will be back. That is what Mahdaviat is: believing that Imam Mahdi will be back. They believe he is hiding in a well in Qom.

What Ahmadinejad, Ayatollah Khamanei and couple of other high ranking Mullahs belong to is a very extreme Shia sect called "Hojatiyeh" which believes in order to make the return of Mahdi faster, they need to corrupt the earth. So Mahdaviat for itself is not so special, not more than Aztecs believing some one will come from the sea. For understanding what is the actual mindset of Ahmadinejad, Google Hojatiyeh.
