Regardless of what "the whole thing" means, it must be important to identical twins to know after birth which one of them was not (AND IS NOT) a person--since the human egg cell (complex dna) was apparently NOT "several" people--BUT ONE PERSON!

At an early stage of development one human organism can become two (or more). If that happens you no longer have only one human organism, you have two (or more). Before that happened you had one organism.
