My experience is that the future stems from ingenuity, not historical behaviour. Of course the past was prelude to the present, so the invention of wooden wheels enabled progression to mags with pneumatic tyres, but it's the ingenuity which imagines the future then turns it into reality and hey presto, the present is very different from the past with the limit being imagination, not past ideas on how to do things.
