AViA may be here.................................. scri.com TOC Brooks Fiber Showcases AG Communication Systems' ATIUM VIA 188 During Live Broadcasts Brooks Fiber showcased AG Communication Systems' ATIUM VIA 188 for remote live broadcasts on KFSN-TV, Channel 30, at the Fresno County Fair. The VIA 188 economically transports high-quality video and data at rates up to 155 Mbps. AGCS successfully demonstrated two VIA 188s for the twice daily broadcasts during the fair Oct. 1-12, 1997. "This is the first time the VIA 188 has been used for professional broadcast media applications," said Wayne Williams, ATIUM VIA 188 business leader for AG Communication Systems. "Broadcast news organizations use the most advanced equipment available and normally require tremendous bandwidth to transport their video signals from remote sites. This demonstration underscores the efficient and high-quality video transmission capabilities of the VIA 188, fully utilizing the capabilities of the fiber optic network." The VIA 188 is about the size of a home video cassette recorder and fits into most existing equipment cabinets. It works with conventional video cameras and monitors. In addition to remote broadcasting, the VIA 188's applications include distance learning, remote arraignment, business teleconferencing, distance medicine and high-speed Internet access. The economically priced VIA 188 performs many functions in one box that are most often performed by several boxes. It offers simultaneous data and MPEG-2 compressed video over ATM. It has LAN/WAN connectivity and does not need to be connected to a switch to operate. It has multipoint add/drop capabilities that consume less bandwidth per application, so the user can get maximum use out of each line. VIA 188 supports multiple ATM MPEG decoders per box, so fewer boxes are needed for a network.
