qualification matters, yes. I'd like to see that broken down. what were the illnesses? what was the time between illness and care? etc.

well, we do just put a strain if we go to the ER. people actually know that. and it just feels stupid to go to the ER for the flu, so you wait until you can't stand up. I actually went to the ER once for an abcessed tooth cause a friend drug me there while I was too out of it to protest. but this was SF General. when I saw 50 people in line in front of me, I became not-out-of-it enough to say "nah, let's stop for a large bottle of aspirin and we will kill this pain until it stops". however... I was a bit lucky. an abcess can cause far seriouser trouble than pain. and also I know I a 'get out of jail' card in terms of having someone to call. it tore me up to see all these people... yes, there were fight injuries and broken bones... but most were just ordinarily ill... parents with sick kids and stuff. it's crazy. and it's expensive.

On the expense of ERs, thinking on the difference between here and SF - here the ER is as clear of people as can be. it is used as an ER for the most part. but we have a clinic that for $50 you can go in and get the regular things checked out. A town of about 15 thousand. how is it that such a thing is not available in a town of the size of SF? those are areas where we could make a difference... providing clinics like that in urban areas. and also in rural areas like in the big west states where some people with coverage drive such distances to get it.
