You are correct. The war in Afghanistan did not bring down the Soviet Union. if so, why are they so able to keep up such an expensive decades long war in Chechnea? (sp?) that bs suits people as much as comparing Afghanistan to Vietnam. give reasons to get out of Afghanistan, fine... but when will we age beyond the days of the 60's and refighting Vietnam? the two do not equate and there is fine writing by people on why they do not. they are utterly dissimiliar wars. people who are younger than 60 can hardly wait to stop fighting the 'wars' of the sixties.

and... there is something to bringing back a king. a unifying figure. it actually worked for Spain, which is now one the largest economies in the world and a vibrant country. he is mostly a figurehead, but a uniter. you might be onto something, Chinu.

You have it reversed in that the Soviets was the main cause for the disintegration of Afghanistan and the establishment of Taliban later. The least the US can do is to restore the King who the Russians deposed. After the restoration, the Afghans can be left to settle things for themselves.

Are you talking about Zahir Shah? Isn't he dead? I thought he died in 2007.
