VA is a red state all 3 of the top state wide offices are run by republicans

The "older more established blue states" are having more people leave them then enter them (esp. if your just considering citizens and legal residents). They may grow from new births, but they have a net out migration.

The newer blue and purple states

Where talking about "blue", and really specifically very "blue" states. Purple states aren't relevant (and its a stretch calling NC even purple, even though it could be said its no longer a hard "red" state)
