The point is that the downturn started when Clinton was president, not after Bush took over.

After a remarkable expansion in the american economy there was a mild downturn...I agree.

Presidents, even very interventionist ones, have less control over the economy than many people think.

I understand you guys need to subdue the positive events of a democratic administration and emphasize the negatives....even though neither may exactly be the making of the sitting president. Got it...next?

Absolutely true IMO, but Obama has had more control than any president I can recall. Reagan was also in control of the economy, basically for the same reason Obama has -- because coming into office the economy was in bad shape and people were willing to give him a "honeymoon" to see what he could do.

Clinton had a briefer shot at "control", and when he squandered it, Gingrich stepped in. Gringrich had as much control as Clinton did.
