The best book on the U.S. occupation of Japan is John Dower's "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II," which won both the Pulitzer Prize in Letters for General Nonfiction, the National Book Award in Nonfiction.

An excellent book that documents the necessity for dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is Richard Frank's "Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire."
