Gen. Stanley McChrystal has said that counterinsurgency is “an argument to win the support of the people.” But it’s not an argument won through sophisticated analysis. It’s an argument won through the display of raw determination. That's exactly what kept us in Vietnam eight years longer than we should have been there, determination triumphing over sophisticated analysis. Also what got us into Iraq on utterly false pretenses. Brooks isn't usually a table-thumping neocon, I'm surprised at this.
