Those were the good old days, for sure! Except for the girdles part...<gg> I'd forgotten those days of shopping too...It was so much fun to dress up to go shopping DOWNTOWN, and if we were lucky, we'd have lunch in Frederick & Nelson's Tearoom, if it was an extra special day. Christmas was always extra special! I remember my mom in a house dress, and my grandmothers as well. One grandmother was so clever with sewing that she grew tired of her house dresses, so went to the Salvation Army, bought mens ties, took them apart and made the 'coolest' dress...one that Betsey Johnson would charge over $1,000 for...She had it cleaned before she wore, and said the cleaning cost more than it cost her to make the dress....She made us all each a quilt, and lots of crocheted table cloths, mats, and of course we all had many wonderful hand knit sweaters. She was a very clever lady with her hands. My other grandmother lived on a ranch consisting of apple, apricot, and some other fruit trees, plus corn...They grew so many things, including her special vegetable and berry garden...She used flour sacks for just about everything, but no, no flour sack dresses for her. She loved pretty dresses, and hats. But as she said one day.....there certainly aren't too many places to wear them around here....<gg>
