Trade was not so nominal in terms of value obviously. The portugese spent a lot effort trying to find alternate sea routes to India.

In any case, there was trade through the sea routes for two millenia. Silk from china was popular among the richest Greek and Romans.

The arabs discovered coffee in Ethipia a millenium ago. It even reached India through Mecca by 17th century
