He would be putting himself in a personally unreconcilable position. He's created a reputation for being radically and actively an enemy of the USA. He wants to be a hero to like minded people. He has declared himself to be a candidate for martyrdom based on his actions against the USA. If he now attempts to change that persona for the sake of saving his skin, what does he do with those results? He has said the Al-Jezeera reporter didn't get it right but I doubt the literal comments from the interview would make much of a difference.
