I tend to think it is a combination of things, some that work in concert and some at odds with each other.

now perhaps we don't care about the rapes in the Congo. but we like the 'stuff' they have that fuel our way of life.

and if they have no 'stuff' how do I actually say i care if my neighbor is raped by a band of rabid men, but I don't care about the woman thousands of miles away? because I can't afford it? we can't afford it? but actually is it not long ago rape was more or less considered okay in this country. so should I stand for what rapists in this country can 'afford' or say there is a greater good involved?

If women across the world have no rights, it would not be long before any rights women have in this country are lost. and I think history backs that up. perhaps it is in my self-interest not to spread 'democracy', but to spread safety and a chance for self-determination for women.
