Just like when Obama bowed before the Saudi King...

One would assume that Obama would know the proper protocol...

In a bow of greeting Obama would only bow as far as the Emperor bowed to him.

Anyone who calls himself the "first pacific president" should know the customs of Japan. If he does know the customs, then he knows that his bow was not a bow of greeting.

I'm guessing he knew what the bow meant. Hell, he has staff that are dedicated to keeping him informed about protocols.

Even the Japanese are embarrassed by Obama's behavior -

"Over the weekend President Obama declared himself the first Pacific president. I'm not sure if that was before or after he bowed to the Japanese emperor while trying to shake his hand at the same time. Unfortunately, that's not exactly how the Japanese perform their customary bow.

ABC's Jake Tapper reports that at least one Japanese newspaper is not printing the picture of the president's mortifying bow because the Japanese are embarrassed by his behavior. A scholar of traditional Japan tells Mr. Tapper, "The bow… did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms… The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak-looking American president."

Kenneth

I had wonderful Japanese neighbors in the D.C. area-----the husband worked for the Embassy. Never did they prostrate themselves in a bow such as Obama did the other day.

This was as bad as Michelle's undiplomatic, rude touching of the Queen of England.

Ain't got no couth!

Dear Krackpot Kenny.

There's a helluva difference between an expression of mutual cultural respect - and rote obeisance based on the fear of reprisal.

OBTW: Please wipe your nose with a tissue, ...there's still a little fecal matter there on your left nostril that didn't come off on your sleave.....

Photographic evidence on-line proves Obama is almost the ONLY head of state who has bowed from the waist to the 'emperor.' The others have nodded their heads in respect - never the limbo-like 'how low can you go' stance Obama takes.

Antarctic cruise gets stuck in ice

Belfast Telegraph, 2009-11-18

.....MORE than 100 tourists, scientists and journalists are stuck in the ice on an Antarctic cruise. But Russia-based Fareastern Shipping Company says passengers on the Captain Khlebnikov icebreaker are in no danger. A spokesman yesterday told Russia's Vesti 24 TV station that the ship is waiting for stronger wind to begin moving. He said the icebreaker needs to cover five miles to reach clear water. Meanwhile, passengers are using the unscheduled stop to tour the surrounding area.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Email to a Friend ShareThis.Advertisement
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 26% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -14. That matches the lowest Approval Index rating yet recorded for this President (see trends).

Over the past month, the number who Strongly Approve of the President’s performance has generally stayed between 27% and 30% (with one exception in each direction). Today’s drop to 26% matches the lowest level of strong approval yet recorded.

The number who Strongly Disapprove has stayed between 37% and 41% every day for over a month. The only previous time that Obama’s Approval Index rating was this low came on August 23. It remains to be seen whether the current low is just statistical noise or if it is something more lasting.

Just 47% of Democrats now Strongly Approve of the President’s performance. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Republicans Strongly Disapprove, as do 43% of those not affiliated with either major political party. These numbers reflect the concern some Democratic analysts are voicing about an enthusiasm gap heading into the 2010 mid-term elections. See other recent demographic highlights.

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates are also available on Twitter and Facebook.

Overall, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. That figure includes 40% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Overall, among all voters, 52% now disapprove.

Republicans continue to hold a six-percentage point lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot.

Just 29% agree with the decision to try Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and five other terrorists suspects in a New York city courtroom. Only 14% believe terrorist suspects should receive the same legal rights in court as U.S. citizens.

Scott Rasmussen and Doug Schoen have a column in Saturday’s Wall Street Journal noting that Obama is losing Independent voters. Rasmussen has recently had three other columns published in the Journal analyzing health care, the President's approval ratings, and how Obama won the White House by campaigning like Ronald Reagan. If you'd like Scott Rasmussen to speak at your meeting, retreat, or conference, contact Premiere Speakers Bureau. You can also learn about Scott's favorite place on earth or his time working with hockey legend Gordie Howe.

Support for the health care plan working its way through Congress is up to 47%, but 49% remain opposed.

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Republican voters say that Sarah Palin shares their values. Just 18% see her as a divisive force within the GOP.

It is important to remember that the Rasmussen Reports job approval ratings are based upon a sample of likely voters. Some other firms base their approval ratings on samples of all adults. President Obama's numbers are always several points higher in a poll of adults rather than likely voters. That's because some of the President's most enthusiastic supporters, such as young adults, are less likely to turn out to vote.

Rasmussen Reports has been a pioneer in the use of automated telephone polling techniques, but many other firms still utilize their own operator-assisted technology (see methodology).

Pollster.com founder Mark Blumenthal noted that “independent analyses from the National Council on Public Polls, the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the Pew Research Center, the Wall Street Journal and FiveThirtyEight.com have all shown that the horse-race numbers produced by automated telephone surveys did at least as well as those from conventional live-interviewer surveys in predicting election outcomes.”

In the 2009 New Jersey Governor’s race, automated polls tended to be more accurate than operator-assisted polling techniques. On reviewing the state polling results from 2009, Mickey Kaus offered this assessment, “If you have a choice between Rasmussen and, say, the prestigious N.Y. Times, go with Rasmussen!”

Additionally, an analysis by Pollster.com partner Charles Franklin “found that despite identically sized three-day samples, the Rasmussen daily tracking poll is less variable than Gallup.” During Election 2008, the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll was the least volatile of all those tracking the race. That stability is one reason that Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com said that the Rasmussen tracking poll “would probably be the one I'd want with me on a desert island."

A Fordham University professor rated the national pollsters on their record in Election 2008. We also have provided a summary of our results for your review. In 2008, Obama won 53%-46% and our final poll showed Obama winning 52% to 46%. While we were pleased with the final result, Rasmussen Reports was especially pleased with the stability of our results. On every single day for the last six weeks of the campaign, our daily tracking showed Obama with a stable and solid lead attracting more than 50% of the vote.

In 2004 George W. Bush received 50.7% of the vote while John Kerry earned 48.3%. Rasmussen Reports was the only firm to project both candidates’ totals within half a percentage point by projecting that Bush would win 50.2% to 48.5%. (see our 2004 results).

Daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. The margin of sampling error—for the full sample of 1,500 Likely Voters--is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Results are also compiled on a full-week basis and crosstabs for full-week results are available for Premium Members.

Like all polling firms, Rasmussen Reports weights its data to reflect the population at large (see methodology). Among other targets, Rasmussen Reports weights data by political party affiliation using a dynamic weighting process. While partisan affiliation is generally quite stable over time, there are a fair number of people who waver between allegiance to a particular party or independent status. Over the past five years, the number of Democrats in the country has increased while the number of Republicans has decreased.

Our baseline targets are established based upon separate survey interviews with a sample of adults nationwide completed during the preceding three months (a total of 45,000 interviews) and targets are updated monthly. Currently, the baseline targets for the adult population are 37.5% Democrats, 32.2% Republicans, and 30.3% unaffiliated. Likely voter samples typically show a slightly smaller advantage for the Democrats.

A review of last week’s key polls is posted each Saturday morning. Other stats on Obama are updated daily on the Rasmussen Reports Obama By the Numbers page. We also invite you to review other recent demographic highlights from the tracking polls.

Uncovering Obama's Stimulus Sham

There were few economists who really believed, despite the promises that the money would go to shovel ready projects that could begin immediately once the funding came through, that the stimulus would really create any net jobs.

An Alternative Stimulus Plan
online.wsj.com

...cutting the payroll tax by six percentage points (of the 12.4% Social Security component) would, under standard assumptions, increase employment by three million to four million workers—an amount equal to all the job losses since the stimulus was passed.

Yet the president and Congress are preparing vast new taxes on employment in the health-care reform and other legislation. Raising the federal top tax rate to 45% (from the current 35% with a 5.4% surcharge plus the expiration of the Bush tax cuts) will hit successful small businesses especially hard. The tax hike on capital gains and dividends hidden in the fine print of the health-care legislation will also raise the cost of equity capital, further weakening businesses (including banks) desperate for private capital. Many firms will also face either an 8% additional payroll tax or be forced to pay a higher share of health insurance premiums. Such tax increases will hit employment and wages hard.

A 'What now?' presidency

The endless series of unfathomable decisions

By Monica Crowley

When a ringing telephone once interrupted her train of thought, American author Dorothy Parker reportedly exclaimed, "What fresh hell is this?" It's a sentiment now shared by most Americans when they think about the Obama administration.

Over the past 10 months, President Obama has subjected the country to a grueling and dizzying whirligig ride. Every day brings a new outrage, failure, resignation, scandalous revelation, incompetence, untruth, laughable spin and, most important, horrifyingly bad policy.

You cannot open a newspaper, go to a news Web site, or turn on cable news without seeing a new story that is more appalling than the last. Just when you think you've heard it all from Team Obama, the next day brings another jaw-dropper.

The man is exhausting. Since taking office, Mr. Obama has given us near-daily fresh hells. He has:

• Signed into law a $787 billion economic "stimulus" meant to create jobs and keep unemployment to 8 percent. Since January, the jobless rate has climbed to 10.2 percent and the stimulus is regarded as an economic failure.

• Pushed for a $1 trillion plus government takeover of health care, complete with Orwellian rationing, monumental tax increases, skyrocketing premiums, massive new bureaucracies, deep Medicare cuts, and lies about finding "savings" in the current system.

• Proposed a $3.5 trillion budget.

• Spent to such an extent that the national deficit stands at a record $1.4 trillion, and the national debt is on track to double in the next five years and triple in 10; further, he supports raising the national debt ceiling, because $12.1 trillion just isn't enough.

• Has taken over much of the U.S. auto industry, including General Motors Corp., whose last chief executive officer he summarily sacked.

• Funneled tens of billions of dollars into GM and Chrysler, only to have them file for bankruptcy anyway, while giving the unions a majority stake.

• Pushed the "cap-and-trade" scheme, which would result in the largest tax increase ever.

• Appointed more than three dozen "czars," accountable to no one but him.

• Forced the resignation of one of them, Van Jones, the "green jobs czar," whose radicalism was too "out there" for a White House that likes its radicalism on the down-low.

• Sanctioned war with Fox News.

• Apologized multiple times for the United States in major speeches abroad.

• Pussyfooted over whether to approve a troop escalation in Afghanistan.

• Disrespected friends from Great Britain (slighting Prime Minister Gordon Brown; giving the queen an iPod, loaded with his own speeches) to Israel (demanding a settlement freeze while accommodating Iran's nuclear ambitions) to Eastern Europe (you're on your own) to the Dalai Lama (you're on your own, too).

• Engaged enemies from Iran (see above) to Hugo Chavez (thanks for the book) to Chavez-lite Manuel Zelaya (what Honduran constitution?) to Russia (who needs that pesky land-based missile defense system anyway?).

• Bowed to Saudi King Abdullah and Japanese Emperor Akihito.

• Joy rode to Copenhagen, only to have the 2016 Olympics go to Rio instead of Chicago.

• OK'd Air Force One to fly low over downtown Manhattan for a photo shoot, causing widespread panic among New Yorkers for whom Sept. 11, 2001, is a fresh memory.

• Jumped to conclusions by criticizing the Cambridge, Mass., police for "acting stupidly" when they arrested a black professor, Henry Louis Gates.

• Had to make up for jumping to conclusions by holding a "beer summit" with Mr. Gates and the arresting officer, Sgt. James Crowley.

• Warned of "jumping to conclusions" after Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan fatally shot 13 of his fellow servicemen and women in an act of jihad at Fort Hood.

• Made an initial statement after the slaughter that featured an opening two minutes of "shout-outs."

• Won the Nobel Peace Prize for accomplishing nothing.

Yet all of this pales in comparison to the mother of all irresponsible decisions made by Mr. Obama last week: the transfer of top al Qaeda terrorists, including Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, from Guantanamo Bay to New York City to stand trial in civilian courts.

Cue the lawyers. Cue the constitutional rights for enemy combatants who do not deserve them. Cue the allegations of government "torture." Cue the trial of former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and the rest of the Bush team. Cue the motions to dismiss, the insanity defenses, and the messed-up criminal proceedings. Cue the terrorists' soap-box use of the ensuing media circus. Cue the astronomical cost of security, and the increased probability of another attack in New York. Cue the possible acquittals, or overturned convictions.

This epic-disaster-in-the-making is the latest fresh hell from Team Obama. The man who was known as "no drama Obama" during the campaign has given us nothing but depleting and infuriating drama since he arrived in office.

A president is supposed to calm the American people with sober decision-making in the national interest. He is not supposed to exhaust us with an unrelenting stream of humiliating and dangerous actions before his first year is through.

He is wearing us out, perhaps deliberately so we'll lack the energy to oppose his future policies. But that's a risky game: A people fatigued by bad presidential judgment aren't inclined to reward him or his party. Mr. Obama is the first president who seems to relish having the public awake each day, thinking "What now?"

Hopefully he will be the last.
