I used to sail San Francisco Bay. On really windy days, I'd leave the main down and just run with a 110% Genny.

My sister, who is a big time sailor like yourself, has been through some pretty rough weather. One year she and her husband took off to adventure sail. She got tired of making life or death decisions every five minutes.

Sailing in a Santa Ana? Sounds cool in a way, cause those are a most interesting wind... but scary. and I can imagine your arms and shoulders weren't too happy after, for sure.

now I'm wanting to see some big water.

the closest I came to such an experience was driving a Fiat 850 spider, lil dinky very light semi-car, over the grapevine from Visalia to LA one night in a big wind. plus the 18-wheelers whizzing by me. I was in lockdown on the steering wheel the whole way. very sore after that.
