That's interesting because when my daughter taught in Las Vegas (second grade) the Hispanic parents demanded homework for their kids.

many of us grew up in that situation decades ago. it is nothing new. only back then we didn't have guidance counsellors etc. no one would grab you and say hey,, wake up. if you did get help at home, and grades you were good you moved forward. if you didn't care , lacked the interest to do algebra etc. no one showed any interest to explain your potential down the road.

many of us grew up in lower income school systems. where our fathers worked in the local factories and it was good enough for them , it was good enough for us. of course another mentor would be if you played sports, you got attention and a chance to change your attitude. At least, we all knew reading , writing and arithmetic.

then again some of were late bloomers and later pushed to get our degrees etc.
