I did not see anyone say that the only path to victory in Afghanistan is winning their hearts and minds. The US needs look only as far as the Anbar province for lessons learned. It was not a victory hatched out by someone like Gen. Petraus. He just got lucky in that he was at the right place at the right time. The right time because the ghastly suicide bombing by a Al Qaeda couple at a Jordanian wedding turned the tide of support of AQ by the Sunnis. The Sunnis were so infuriated that they were seeking out the AQ folks hiding in their midst and helping the US military to kill them. This included giving the whereabouts of the Iraqi AQ person who was killed with the 500 ton bomb dropped on his house.

That is the secret to winning in Afghanistan. Not just brute force through the use of military and police force. That is just a miniscule part of the solution. IMHO.

Re Afganistan - This person believes the key to victory is working with the tribes. I expect he may be right. A long but interesting article.
