can you give a couple of specific examples of countries, states, other large places that clearly benefit more with less government or controls

West Germany benefited from having less control of the economy than East Germany. South Korea benefited from less government control than North Korea. Hong Kong and Singapore benefited compared to other Asian or Pacific cities. The US benefited from less socialism than Mexico, and less than Europe (although we've been increasing government control a lot so in the future we may not have the same benefit).

Looking the other way the UK harmed its economy a lot with all the socialism it imposed after WWII.

I can't think of a government that is as "off the backs" of the people as Somalia - but they never want to tout the place!
